Rat sculpture agouti by philosophyfox Rat sculpture agouti by philosophyfox
Polymer clay over a wire and foil armature. Painted with acrylics and sealed with Citadel Purity Seal.

This was a commission of someone's (deceased) pet as a gift for Christmas. I really enjoyed making this guy, and I really like how his fur turned out.

this really does show all the best of what a rat means to us humans. you can see the smile in the eyes, the love and trust in the pose. the only thing slightly off is a slight lack of delicacy in the fingers and toes, but i would rather have a lack of delicacy than a toe that broke off from being too perfectly delicate.

Thank you. It is so hard getting the feet/tails right/more dynamic and balance the risk of them breaking in transit. I am working on a new blend of clay in order that I might get finer detail, or baking in pieces if it doesn't work. It's so hard getting them to the right scale, they are always at least 25% bigger than they should be!

how much would something like this cost? I think I will have to put my family pet rat down today and would love to have something as a memorial, to go outside where we bury him.

These chaps take up to three months to make, I think about 72 hours in total, approximately, but as I rely on daylight for much of it, I am limited during the winter months.

I'm glad you like him :)

:D Thank you. I know they aren't anatomically perfect, but I try and focus on the character of the rat as much as I do the shape and colours.

You're very close to the real anatomy and I know rat anatomy is difficult, so you can be proud of your sculpture  You're welcome!
